NatureMapping announces the online data entry and location mapping site for reporting your wildlife observations.

One of our goals is to create a biodiversity database and build layers of information about birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, fish, terrestrial and aquatic insects and plants in a way that when combined gives all of us a picture of the biological health of an area...a neighborhood, city, county, and state.

Your data will be added to the NatureMapping database after further review.

Currently, data can be entered for the following states: AR, CA, IA, MA, MI, NY, PA, TX, VA, WA other states will be added in conjunction with the development of their spreadsheet and NatureTracker software for PDA's with GPS units.

California NatureMapping Program - Website Launched

The NatureMapping Program – Our goal is to keep common animals common and to maintain our quality of life. Citizens and schools collecting data to share in a public database to learn about biodiversity…what lives where they live and why they live there.

NatureMapping provides materials, skill building workshops, and technology tools for you, as a community contributor, to inventory and help monitor our shared natural resources.

California Wildlife Distribution Maps

Predicted Distribution Maps
Distribution maps for California wildlife have been updated. View range maps for Amphibians, Birds, Mammals or Reptiles.

The purpose of the vertebrate distribution maps is to provide more precise information about the current distribution of individual native species within their general ranges than is generally available from field guides.

The habitats were identified using satellite imagery, other datasets and experts throughout the state, as part of the California Gap Analysis Project.

This workshop will provide formal and non-formal educators with the skills needed to aid learners in the NatureMapping process. The basic data collection and monitoring techniques of are all included, plus
activities to engage learners in the process. This two-day workshop also includes time spent in the field applying the NatureMapping process. It is not open to non-educators.

Beautiful wildlife photos have been added to the animal fact sheets on the NatureMapping website. Some of the pages also have a spanish version of the fact sheet. There are interesting new web pages featuring the Red-winged Blackbird, Turkey Vulture, and Tree Swallow.

The NatureMapping Foundation Launches Website

The NatureMapping Foundation is a national 501(c)(3) organization which empowers individuals to participate in the inventory and monitoring of biodiversity. A new website was launched at naturemappingfoundation.org

The NatureMapping Foundation was established to provide funding and direction for the NatureMapping Program, to unify the efforts of NatureMapping activities occurring across the United States and abroad, and to provide a scientific link to the growing number of businesses, organizations and individuals who are working towards establishment of a new, sustainable economy.

Moving from activities to field research, NatureMapping is a tool for students and citizens to use to help determine a healthy future for fish and wildlife through the use of sound scientific techniques. Classroom and field work will include the use of maps, wildlife identification tips, habitat coding, building a search image, tracking and data collection procedures.

Animal Fact Sheets

A series of new animal fact sheets have been designed for elementary and secondary school students. Learn interesting facts about cougars and view a paw print in the snow. Read about how hummingbirds survive the winter. The web pages are richly illustrated with animal photos, tracks and silhouettes. Distribution maps developed by the NatureMapping Program show you where the animals live in the wild.
